Pieniężno Municipality

An urban-rural municipality in Braniewo County, with its seat in the town of Pieniężno. It covers 241.43 km² and is home to about 6,400 residents (the town itself has about 2,400). It has an agricultural and forest character — farmland makes up about 68% of its area and forests about 20%; it comprises 38 localities organised into 24 village councils.

• In 1518–1519 Nicolaus Copernicus lived and worked at the bishops’ castle in Pieniężno (as a canon of Warmia); surviving monuments include the 14th-century castle, a church from 1897 and a railway bridge from 1885.
• The town is home to the Missionary and Ethnographic Museum of the Divine Word Missionaries. In August 1944 the town was about 90% destroyed by Allied air raids.
