Sępopol

An urban-rural municipality in the north-eastern part of Bartoszyce County, bordering the Kaliningrad Oblast of the Russian Federation. The municipality covers 246.58 km² and has 5,698 residents (2023, Statistics Poland). It accounts for about 18.84% of Bartoszyce County’s area, and its seat is the town of Sępopol — one of the smallest towns in Poland. The municipality has a strongly agricultural character: 72% of its area is farmland and 17% forests.

Irena Wołosiuk was re-elected mayor in the 2024 local elections with 56.91% of the vote (Law and Justice electoral committee).

This local government takes part in the shared territorial strategy of the borderland through 2030 and in the CuRI 2026–2027 programme (Eastern Border Regions Catching-up Regions Initiative, European Commission + World Bank).
